Eric Larson

Eric Larson grew up outside of Chicago and graduated from the University of Illinois. He served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Comitancillo, San Marcos and Canillá, Quiché from 2011-2013. He then returned to Guatemala in 2014 as a Response Volunteer in Chajul, Quiché.

Eric has travelled extensively in Central America and would like to pursue a career in international development or foreign service.

He currently lives in Tucson, where he is studying towards a Master's in Public Administration at the University of Arizona.

In his free time, Eric enjoys baseball, the great outdoors, and searching for real corn tortillas. Unfortunately, he has yet to find any that can compare to those from the highlands of Guatemala.

Eric's book, pictured at right, is now available at Amazon.com. Click Here

WHY WE'RE DIFFERENT

Other Places Travel Guides are researched and written by Returned Peace Corps Volunteers, adventurous US citizens who are sent overseas for 27 months of service, cultural interchange, and language training. During their service, Peace Corps Volunteers live with local families, integrate into their communities, and experience everything their countries have to offer. PCVs can hardly be considered “expatriates,” but rather as locals - living, working and playing while their host country becomes a second home.

WHY WE'RE BETTER

Guatemala has been on the tourist radar for quite some time, and the available travel guides for the country are excellent. That being said, frequent travelers know that the first person to talk to when you visit a country is a Peace Corps Volunteer. To save you the work, Other Places Publishing finds them for you! With only a small, monthly stipend, PCVs are notorious for discovering hidden eateries flocked by locals. They know those “most bang for your buck” guesthouses with million dollar views. And giving advice on how to travel cheaply and easily, make friends, and discover new spots is no problem either.

WHY GUATEMALA?

Guatemala is more than the mind-boggling Mayan ruins of Petén, the volcano-ringed Lake Atitlán, and the vibrant colonial architecture of Antigua. Guatemala is its humble, honest, and hard-working people who have struggled with violence and corruption for far too long. Guatemala is a resilient indigenous culture that stretches across the highlands and dots the mountains with color and life. Guatemala is an "Other Place" you'll never forget.
